Dear PMIG friends,

It is time to make plans to attend this year's Person Memory Interest Group (PMIG) meeting, prior to the SESP convention in Madison, WI. We are thrilled this year to secure the use of The Abbey Resort. The facility is located 70 miles from Madison, 90 miles from Chicago, and 45 minutes from Milwaukee on Geneva Lake -- 269 Fontana Blvd. Fontana, WI 53125. The link to book your room is provided below. First, a reminder of pertinent conference information and summary of details about our 2023 event.

As is our tradition, the formal program sessions will be held all day on Wednesday (October 11) and on Thursday morning (October 12). All are expected to be in attendance for dinner on Tuesday October 10. However, we encourage people to arrive on Monday afternoon/evening (October 9) if possible, to enjoy a full day Tuesday of exploring the outdoors, sightseeing, talking with long-time friends, making new friends, and general informal activity. This aspect of our schedule has become a valued hallmark of PMIG meetings and people find that it's much more than a day of relaxation; it's also a time of merging science with nature, of informal sharing of ideas, and of learning about others' research in one-to-one conversations, etc. Another hallmark of our meeting is that we share in all events together – meals, talks, and evening social events. This produces three costs (food, lodging, facilities) for the event that each vary from year-to-year. We strive to make the total costs remain consistent over the years, to the extent possible. For example, this year, food costs are $125 higher than last year, but lodging is less ($75 less per night per room), with the total costs you would pay being approximately the same as last year (as detailed below).
Program. As in recent years, our program will feature invited talks and an informal paper session. Both types of presentations will be included on the conference program. The program will also feature the Ostrom award session, which will feature talks from each of this year’s winners – Galen Bodenhausen and Diane Mackie.
Invited Talks. We encourage attendees to submit a talk title and brief abstract (250 words max) for consideration. Submission is done via the registration portal. We expect to notify the selected speakers by early September. To speak at the meeting, one must have received a doctorate degree prior to October 2023. This is not a requirement to attend the meeting.
Informal Paper Presentations. All attendees are invited to submit a paper title (no abstract required) if they would like to present during the informal paper session. Informal papers will also appear on the conference program.
Accommodations. Each attendee is responsible for making their own lodging arrangement with The Abbey Resort by September 1, 2023. Use this link to reserve your room.
We have reserved a block of rooms for our attendees. All rooms in the block are standard hotel-style rooms with a private bathroom. Rooms have either one king bed or two queen beds. ADA-accessible rooms are also available for reservation.
The room rate is $135/night (room is $120 and the resort fee is $15) plus taxes (about another $12) for single occupancy (about $150 total). For rooms being shared, there is an additional charge of $15 per person. Thus, with double occupancy the nightly rate would be $150/night (room is $120, extra person charge is $15, and resort fee is $15) plus tax (about $85 per room occupant). These room rates are substantially less money than in prior years, which will be offset by higher food costs this year!
When you reserve your room, you will need to provide a credit card number. The Abbey will hold one night’s rate as a deposit on your credit card. The deposit cannot be split between attendees. At check-out, attendees will be able to split the costs of shared accommodations. Attendees will receive receipts from the site.
Costs. Total costs are based on whether one arrives on Monday or Tuesday, and whether one shares a room or stays alone. Below are the total costs for each of these four options. The fees will be collected at three separate points in time. A conference registration fee will secure your place at the event and is paid when you register. Food and beverage costs are paid to PMIG by September 28. Lodging fees are paid directly to the hotel upon checkout.
Monday arrival (for comparison, a single in 2022 had total costs of $1245)
Single: $1179 ($450 of which is paid per person directly to the hotel)
Double: $984 ($255 of which is paid per person directly to the hotel)
Tuesday arrival (for comparison, a double in 2022 had total costs of $710)
Single: $814 ($300 of which is paid per person directly to the hotel)
Double: $684 ($170 of which is paid per person directly to the hotel)
As mentioned above, attendees are asked to pay the entire cost for their arrival day. We do not make exceptions for individual attendees. If you need to arrive late or leave early for some reason, you still must pay the costs for the entire conference. This is because the cost of group meals must be shared by all attendees in order to make the conference financially viable and to keep the total costs equal from year-to-year. We negotiate all three financial components with an eye toward balancing the total cost. Attendees cannot then choose to stay in separate lodging or to not pay for some of the meals. It is a “pay one price” event (though the costs are collected in installments; as described above, with details below).
Payment. The registration fee this year remains at $95. This fee covers the costs associated with putting on the conference – room rental fees, A/V fees, hotel staff fees. After completing your registration form, please submit this first payment directly to PMIG via Zelle (Recipient: personmemoryconference@gmail.com) or by check made payable to Person Memory Interest Group and sent to:
Gordon Moskowitz
111 South 15th street, Apt. P315
Philadelphia, PA, 19102
The registration fee must be received no later than August 15, 2023. The registration fee receipt also serves as a confirmation that you have successfully registered for Person Memory 2023. Cancellations before October 1 can be issued a full reimbursement of fees paid to PMIG.
The next payment is based on whether you will be arriving on Monday or Tuesday. We will bill you for this in late August, with payments made the same way as above.

Non-U.S. residents can make all payments in cash (US $) at the conference (credit cards cannot be accepted). Receipts will be issued promptly after funds have been received (and those using Zelle will receive an additional receipt that way).
